WMI Wilderness First Aid & Wilderness First Responder Recertification
When 9-1-1 is not an option, the rules change ... plain and simple! For 15 years the Wilderness Medicine Institute (WMI) has defined the standards in wilderness medicine training, offering a wide range of course and certification opportunities tailored to meet the needs of outdoor, recreational and educational professionals. They’ve trained over 40,000 students all over the world and now for one weekend (February 16-17) instructors from the accredited National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) will be on campus to teach a wide range of wilderness medicine topics for persons who travel in the outdoors. Don’t get caught in the woods asking, “What do I do now?” Be prepared!
Leave No Trace (LNT) Master Educator Course
Coming in May! Leave No Trace is an national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, run, bike, hunt, paddle, fish, ski, climb, etc. The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts. A Master Educator course is typically five days in length and designed for people who are actively teaching others backcountry skills or providing recreation information to the public. As of January 2008, there are over 2200 Leave No Trace Masters world wide representing nine countries and 50 U.S. states! Each course is staffed with a minimum of two highly experienced outdoor professionals who are Master Educator Instructors. You will learn Leave No Trace techniques through skits, discussions, and hands-on activities. To practice Leave No Trace teaching strategies in a supportive, educational environment, each participant will teach a short session geared toward minimum impact Leave No Trace concerns. The Master Course provides participants with a comprehensive overview of Leave No Trace skills and ethics through practical application in a field-based setting.
Spring break is right around the corner, which means were going to Mexico!! It’s the Outdoor Connections Center first international trip, providing a great alternative for the traditional spring break destinations. The trip will be educational, recreational, and most importantly fun. We’ll be enjoying the mountains, bluffs, crystal clear water, and sunshine from the cockpit of a sea kayak on the clear blue Sea of Cortez.

Intramural Basketball is in full swing as the third week comes to a close. The teams are fiercely battling each other for position heading into the final week of the regular season. As teams begin to get a clearer picture on where they stand on our website http://imrs.uark.edu many teams notice the top ten rankings page on the website. As a result the Intramural Staff has fielded a flurry of questions regarding the formula that determines these rankings. In short, it is a mathematical formula that takes into account such variables as sportsmanship rating, won-loss record, points for, points against, and strength of schedule. An in depth look at the current rankings leaves one to wonder how accurate these rankings actually are, so in the spirit of Intramural fun the Intramural Staff has compiled a list of the top 5 per division from the staff’s perspective.

Question: What’s the deal with us not being allowed to bring in bags and large personal belongings into the Fitness Center?
Answer: The Donna Axum Fitness Center does not allow bags and personal belongings for a few reasons. First, in order to maximize the space available for fitness equipment, there is no space allotment for personal storage. Bags and other items on the floor can cause a trip hazard for users, especially when placed near walkways or fitness equipment pieces. The facility is kept safer when excess items are not permitted on usable floor space. Second, there is no good way to secure your belongings in the Fitness Center. Any items left unattended could become subject to theft or loss. To eliminate this risk, IMRS asks that members accept responsibility for their own personal belongings and secure them in a locker. Locker prices are $4, $8, and $12 per semester.
