IMRS Inclement Weather Policy

Wintery severe weather can hit at any time.  Intramural/Recreational Sports has developed an inclement weather policy to be able to provide users with up to date information related to closing early, opening late, or closing for the day.  We think it is very important to be able to provide recreational opportunities to the University community and those who remain on campus during severe winter weather.  IMRS has established the following schedule during inclement weather:

University Opens Late
·
IMRS facilities within HPER will open and operational by 8:00 a.m.
·  IMRS programs and activities will follow their regular schedule after 8:00 a.m.

University Closed for the Day
·
The HPER Building will open from 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.
·
The Fitness Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. until 6:30 p.m.
·
The pool will be open from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

Ice Hockey Club Off and Skating

You read right…The University of Arkansas now has an ice hockey club.  After being granted ice time for practice at the Jones Center in Springdale, the group of dedicated students have practiced hard all fall semester.  The club will is competing this semester in the American Collegiate Hockey Association, Division III.  On January 11th the group traveled to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for a double header against the Crimson Tide.  Despite losing the first game 4-1 and the second 4-3, eh club felt they played extremely well for their first offical games.  The group will next travel to Nashville, Tennessee on Jan. 18 for another double header; they will take on Middle Tennessee State on Friday then face Vanderbilt on Saturday.  Other games are still being arranged.  For more information on the Ice Hockey Club you can email hockey@uark.edu.

Fitness Tips for 2008

Happy 2008!  The IMRS Program is excited to offer a variety of Fitness/Wellness opportunities to help reestablish healthy eating and exercise habits after the long holiday season.  Whatever your goals might be for the upcoming year, please consider some of the following tips that might help you be successful.

  • Try new things.  While there is nothing wrong with having a favorite exercise routine, your body responds to new challenges by getting stronger and burning more calories.  Mix up your routine by trying multiple cardiovascular machines in one workout.  Incorporate different weight machines than usual into your strength training circuit.  Try a yoga class to address often-neglected flexibility and core strength.  Trying different activities will not only make your body more responsive to exercise, but can also reduce your risk of injury and keep your motivation fresh.
  • Be flexible.  Even the most well-planned exercise routines are susceptible to life’s ever-changing plans.  Instead of planning to work out on Monday/Wednesday/Friday, why not simply make it a goal to work out three times per week?  Or if the Donna Axum Fitness Center is just a little too crowded for your comfort during the late afternoon and evening, why not try a Group Exercise or Mind/Body class during this time?  Life will always bring change in our daily routines… be willing to try something that you hadn’t necessarily planned in your fitness routine as well.
  • Exercise outside of the “box”.  While the Donna Axum Fitness Center is a great place to exercise, don’t leave your commitment to fitness and physical activity at the door when you’re done.  Walking to nearby destinations instead of driving, using the stairs instead of the elevator, and enjoying physically active recreation activities such as playing with a pet are all great ways to make sure that your body stays moving throughout the day.  Physical activity can take place anytime, anywhere… even small amounts add up!

Donna Axum Fitness Center information and Group Exercise, Mind/Body, and H20bics schedules can be found at http://imrs.uark.edu/2592.htm.
