Quaker State 3-on-3 Challenge Rules Summary

TEAM COMPOSITION

  • Games are to be played 3-on-3.
  • All participants must be enrolled at their respective Universities. All students will be required to present the proper identification at the initial sign up as well as at onsite registration, on the day of the tournament.
  • Participants may not be a varsity athlete of any sport at their respective school or on any athletic scholarship.
  • Each team will consist of 4 players per team with 3 playing at a time and 1 substitute. Players are only eligible to play on one team.

GAMEPLAY & SCORING

  • Games will be played to 24 points.
  • Converted shots inside the three point arc will count for two points
  • Converted shots outside the three point arc will count for three points.
  • One free throw for 2 points starting on the 5th team foul or any shooting foul inside the arc and one free throw for 3 points for attempting a 3 point outside the arc. Anytime a shooting foul should occur with a made basket that team would get to attempt one free throw for one point.  No one lines up for the free-throw.  After the free-throw, the balls will go to the team that fouled.
  • If a team has not reached 24 points after 20 minutes (running clock), the team currently leading the game will be determined the winner.

Each team will be required to take a shot at the basket within a normal amount of time, officials will use their discretion. If a team is thought to be stalling officials can award ball to defense.

  • This rule has been implemented to eliminate a team from stalling to retain possession at the end of a game.
  • If the two teams are tied after 20 minutes, the game will go to sudden death.
  • There are no timeouts
  • Winners need only win by one point.

GAME RULES

  • The visiting team on the score sheet will have possession to start a game. The possession arrow will determine the start of sudden death.
  • Ball possession changes after a basket is made unless a foul is awarded.
  • The imaginary “check line” is beyond the three point arc at the top of the key.
  • To start a game, possession after a score, overtime or when a foul is awarded, a player must PASS the ball in from the check line.
  • The defense MUST take the ball behind the “check line” on any play in which they gain possession. Whether or not the ball has been shot or has touched the rim does not affect this rule.
  • In the event that the defense obtains possession and does not take the ball behind the “check line” AND then attempts to shoot, the shot and any related activity will be disregarded and a turnover will result. The “new defense” is awarded the ball behind the “check line”.
  • Substitutions can be made after a basket, a foul, or stoppage of play by an official.

FOULS AND FREE THROWS

  •  All common, personal, and technical fouls shall be counted against the team total.
  • A bonus will be awarded starting with the fifth team foul. Bonus is one free-throw for 2 points.

  • Shooting fouls with a missed basket shall result in an attempted free-throw for 2 points. Shooting fouls with a converted basket shall result in the basket counted and an attempted free-throw for 1 point.
