Basketball will be conducted under the rules
of the National Federation of State High School Basketball Rules. A review of
these rules, along with the Intramural/Recreational Sports modifications
follows:
THE
PLAYERS, UNIFORMS, & EQUIPMENT
I. Team Roster's - Teams may add players
until the second Friday at 3pm after play starts: Players may only play for one (1) team.
II. Players: All students, faculty or staff can participate
provided they meet the eligibility requirements outlined in the Intramural
Sports Handbook.
III. IDs - Each team member is responsible
for checking in with the scorekeeper and must show his/her current U of A ID
before being allowed to play. All participants must bring their
IV. Forfeits - Teams must start the game
with a minimum of four players. Three players are required to check in with
scorekeeper prior to scheduled game time avoid a forfeit fine.
V. Uniforms
- All teams are required to furnish their own jerseys. The jerseys
are not required to be of basketball style, but all must be of the same
color. If team does not have jerseys, pennies will be provided.
- It is required that all jerseys have numbers on the back. No three
(3) digit numbers or half numbers will be allowed.
- A player who is bleeding, or has open wound, or has an excessive
amount of blood on his/her uniform must leave the game until the situation
is rectified. The player must wait until the next dead ball to re-enter
the game.
VI.
Equipment
- Jewelry or hard hair control devices will not be allowed. This
includes but is not limited to necklaces, earrings, newly pierced
earrings, facial piercing, rings, bracelets & watches. Individuals
will not be allowed to tape over any jewelry item. If you cannot remove
the item you cannot play.
- Only non-marking shoes will be allowed. Basketball style shoes are
preferred.
- No hats or bandanas may be worn during play.
TIMING REGULATIONS, PLAYING PERIODS, & TIMEOUTS
I.
Periods
- Games will consist of two (2) halves lasting twenty (20) minutes
each.
- In the second half, if a team is behind by 50 points the game is
over. In the second half, If a team is behind more than 30 points
with five (5) minutes or 20 points with two (2) minutes or less remaining,
the game is over.
II.
Timing - The clock will stop only on:
- Time-outs
- The last minute (1 minute) of the second half when a play is
whistled dead.
III.
Time-outs
- Each team is granted two (2) time-outs per game.
- Officials, Supervisors, and Intramural/Recreational Sports Staff
have the right to suspend play of any game as deemed necessary.
OVERTIME PROCEDURE
I.
Periods
Overtime
is two (2) minutes in length. If the score is still tied after the first
overtime period, another overtime period will be played. Overtime periods will
continue until a winner is determined.
II.
Timing
The
clock will run the same as the last minute of the second half.
III.
Time-outs
Each
team is allowed to carry over one (1) time-out from regulation. Teams will be
awarded one (1) time-out during overtime play. Thus, the maximum total amount
of time of time-outs a team may have in overtime would be two (2).
GENERAL PLAYING RULES
I.
Free throws
- Bonus Free throws (i.e. one and one) will begin on the seventh (7)
team foul in each half.
- Starting on the tenth (10) team foul in each half two (2) foul
shots will be awarded.
- During free throw attempts, players are allowed to occupy only
marked lane spaces or are required to be behind the three-point line and
the free throw line extended to the sides of the court.
- ALL players that are occupying a marked lane space shall not break
the plane of the free throw lane until the ball touches the basket rim or
the backboard.
- Personal and technical fouls are combined for player
disqualification and to reach the bonus.
- Three (3) Free throws will be awarded to a player fouled in the act
of shooting an unsuccessful 3 - point shot.
II.
Unsportsmanlike Behavior
- The captain shall be the only player to talk to any official on
matters of rule interpretations. Excessive complaining by players or
coaches will not be tolerated.
- All technical fouls result in two (2) free throws and possession of
the ball.
- Two (2) technical fouls issued to one (1) player will result in the
ejection of that player. All ejected players will have to leave the
gymnasium within one (1) minute or the game will be forfeited. Players
ejected for any reason will be ineligible to participate in ANY Intramural
event until the player(s) involved meet with the Associate Director of
Intramural/Recreational Sports. Refer to the Sportsmanship Policy in the
IMRS Handbook.
- Three (3) unsporting technicals issued to one (1) team will result
in the forfeiture of the game.
- Dunking the ball will not be permitted during warm-ups. The penalty
will be one (1) technical foul for each dunk.
- Substitutes must report to the score's table and
beckoned in by the officials. Illegal substitutions will result in a
technical foul.
- Hitting, punching, or kicking the garage doors will result in an
automatic technical foul
III.
Co-Rec Rules
- Teams must have 5 players on the roster at all times. There must be
at least three (3) women on the roster to qualify as a Co-Rec team. The
game may be started with four (4) players two (2) female and two (2) male
or three (3) females and one (1) male. If five (5) are present, three (3)
females must be on the court.
