PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The Intramural/Recreational Sports Program is the major campus-wide service unit of the Department of Health Science, Kinesiology, Recreation and Dance and the College of Education and Health Professions. The program serves the university community by providing a diverse selection of recreational opportunities and facilities, which are designed to enhance the quality of life of each participant. The Intramural/Recreational Sports Program performs a vital role in the recruitment and retention of students, faculty, and staff.
In order to meet the diverse recreational needs of the university community, the program is organized into eight program areas: Intramural Sports, Sport Clubs, Fitness/Wellness, Special Events, Instructional, Facility Management, Outdoor Recreation, and Accessible Recreation. Brief program descriptions are as follows:
Intramural Sports Program: The Intramural Sports Program sponsors approximately 40 individual and/or team sports during the academic year. The program is organized into Men’s and Women’s Greek, Residence Hall, and Open Leagues. A point system is used in the Greek and Residence Hall Leagues to reward participation and success. Awards are provided for the champions in all leagues and are also given to the overall champions of each sport.
Sport Club Program: The Sport Club Program provides opportunities for individuals who share a common interest in a specific sport to enjoy the benefits of a group experience. Clubs are regulated by program and university regulations but retain the characteristics of self-administration and self-regulation. Members assume a variety of roles within the club (member, officer, coach) and are called upon to assist in all aspects of club operations.
Fitness/Wellness Program: The Fitness/Wellness Program offers a variety of fitness and wellness activities that are designed to meet the physical, mental, and social needs of the participants. Fitness/Wellness activities may require advanced registration. Examples include aerobics, aqua-aerobics, weight training, personal training, group exercise, and massage. The Donna Axum Fitness Center is managed by the Fitness/Wellness Program. A Lifestyle Assessment Program is available to students to assess and monitor their fitness goals and progress. The program encompasses personnel training, health and fitness testing, and one-on-one consultations.
Special Events Program: The Special Events Program provides a diverse selection of quality recreational activities in a leisure environment that enhances personal development through social and personal interaction. Approximately 2-3 events are held each month during the regular school year. All activities are designed to complement the university s recruitment and retention efforts.
Instructional Program: The Instructional Program offers opportunities for various non-credit classes, lessons, or certifications. Regular offerings include American Red Cross First Aid and CPR, Lifeguard Instruction, and Learn to Swim. In addition, program offerings include, but are not limited to, areas of instruction relating to dance, health topics, and sport instruction. Participants who are interested in a particular class offering are encouraged to express this interest to the IMRS Program.
Facility Management Program: The Facility Management Program offers quality support services, which enhance activities and academic programs offered by the Intramural/ Recreational Sports Program, the Department of Health Sciences, Kinesiology, Recreation, and Dance, and the University of Arkansas. The primary areas of responsibilities are scheduling, supervision, maintenance, membership recruitment, security of the HPER Building, and drop-in recreation activities. Examples of drop-in activities include weight lifting, swimming, racquetball, and basketball. HPER memberships, guest passes, locker and towel rentals, racquetball reservations, and modern fitness equipment are available to qualified students, faculty, staff, and alumni. In addition, the recreational facilities of the HPER Building are available to organizations for special events.
Outdoor Connection Center: The primary service of the Outdoor Connection Center is the rental of camping and sporting equipment to the university community. The Program also sponsors outdoor educational seminars and clinics on such topics as canoeing, kayaking, backpacking, climbing, cycling, environmental issues, and outdoor opportunities in Arkansas and across the nation. Wilderness First-Aid, Leave No Trace, Orienteering and Search and Rescue courses are just some of the clinics and seminars offered through the OCC. The OCC also has a climbing wall and a bouldering wall that is free for students and HPER members.
Accessible Recreation Program: The Accessible Recreation Program is designed to provide individualized instruction and/or assistance in fitness or sporting activities. Instructors or partners are assigned on a need basis for a variety of activities including racquetball, swimming, weight lifting, and exercise programs. Some specialized equipment is provided to improve access to facilities and facilitate participation. The program emphasizes health-related activities.
